ABOUT THE DUSKY GOPHER FROG: Your USB is housed in a high-quality rubber sculpture of Lithobates Sevosus, otherwise known as the dusky gopher frog, commissioned specifically for this project. One of the rarest frogs in the world, the dusky gopher is also known as the St. Tammany gopher frog or the Mississippi gopher frog and was once endemic to The Gulf Coastal Plain but is now found only in a few ponds around Harrison County Mississippi and is currently on the endangered species list. The female of this species lays her eggs in ponds that emerge after heavy rains. Such ponds are called “ephemeral ponds” because of their ever-shifting liminal nature, appearing and disappearing throughout the year. The ‘gopher’ nickname is because adult frogs often seek shelter in holes dug by the gopher tortoise.
The disappearance of this frog is a result of rapid deforestation and new construction in its habitat. The dusky gopher frog became semi-famous in 2018, when the US supreme court overthrew a 2016 lower-court ruling, allowing the US Fish and Wildlife Service to block private commercial construction interests to protect the habitats of this and other endangered species. This case was originally to be the first supreme court case heard by Brett Kavanaugh, before his confirmation was delayed by rape allegations, thus garnering a lot of international frog-related press amid the horrible hoopla. Unfortunately, his absence did not alter the fate of this album’s hero but beware puny humans – DUSKY GOPHER SHALL HAVE HER REVENGE!

about

A throbbing, deep-swamp-listening album, created with the "Wildlife Organ" instrument as well as Mellotron, Weather Warlock, and other homemade synths. The USB frog seen on the cover is the actual USB you will receive (click on merch for this release). These little USB frogs were custom designed specifically for this project to look like the infamous dusky gopher frog. The live frogs seen on the cover are "Whites Tree Frogs".

ABOUT THE WILDLIFE ORGAN: The Wildlife Organ was built by Quintron in May and June of 2023 at A Studio in the Woods, an educational / artistic residency program located as far down the Mississippi River as you can get before it begins to splinter out into Gulf of Mexico. The premise is simple – four high quality condenser microphones, housed in protective tubes located at different elevations in the remote woods and swamps. Each of the four microphones were dialed in to capture different wildlife sounds – tree frogs, mockingbirds, carpenter bees, feral hogs, gators, nutria, even the occasional person or pet dog. These sounds were then “musicalized” with custom built circuitry and used as inspiration for more homemade synth music which was layered over the nature sounds at the Spellcaster Lodge recording studio in New Orleans. If you have ever wanted your old Folkways nature-sounds LPs dumped into the blender with an army of budget synths...
